in the morning of 1.7.1942 this submarine and the U 255 discovered the
convoy PQ.17 about 60
miles east of Jan Mayen. Herglotz was lucky of
not being aboard of the U 408 in the third patrol:
on 5.11.1942 the submarine was sunk and the whole crew (45) lost. |

Harmut Herglotz, son of Helmut Herglotz,
remembers that his father told that, being submerged during an exercise,
they collided with another submarine, that destroyed the tower of
U 2. At the left, Herglotz as commander of this type II U-Boot, that
can be only U 2.

with 8 injured, has to suspend the patrol. Repair actions lasted until
