Helmut Herglotz. born on March 15th, 1918 in Berndorf, Wiener Neustadt (Austria). Kriegsmarine Crew 1938. On the back it is written: 3.11.1938.

"Pernambuk"

Albert Leo Schlageter, twin ship of the GORCH FOCK, launched on July 15th, 1937. Commissioned on October 30th, 1937, shortly after that, the Schlageter mades a trip to South America and before the war, to Tenerife, Copenhagen and Pernambuco.

Until April 1941: UWO-training in Pillau. 28.3.-17.4.1941 I WO in U 138 (commander: Franz Gramitzky January 1st, 1941-June 18th, 1941 captured, promoted to Kl 1.8.43).

Herglotz escaped 4 years prison by being designated to the 143 (18.4.-20.9.1941). U 138 was sunk on 18.06.1941 and the whole crew (27) captured.

Herglotz was on two patrols in the Artic with U 408: in the morning of 1.7.1942 this submarine and the U 255 discovered the convoy PQ.17 about 60 miles east of Jan Mayen. Herglotz was lucky of not being aboard of the U 408 in the third patrol: on 5.11.1942 the submarine was sunk and the whole crew (45) lost.

4.45-4.5.45 until de end of the war commander of the U 1303 (VIIC) Flensburg.

Harmut Herglotz, son of Helmut Herglotz, remembers that his father told that, being submerged during an exercise, they collided with another submarine, that destroyed the tower of U 2. At the left, Herglotz as commander of this type II U-Boot, that can be only U 2.

U 290: Type: VII C. Commissioned: 24.07.1943, Commanders: 24.07.1943 - 26.12.1943 Kl Hartmut Strenger. 27.12.1943 - 04.1945 OlzS Helmut Herglotz. Sunk: 05.05.1945 by the own crew. Photos down: January 1944. Herglotz als Commander of U 290.

Visit in the Wintergarten of U 290: at the left a civilian, in the center-right a Wehrmacht officer.

The U 290 was attacked the 14.6.44 by a  norwegian Mosquito of the 333 Squadron and, with 8 injured, has to suspend the patrol. Repair actions lasted until August.

U-Boot type VII in Norway. It can be U 290 or another with Schnorchel.

U 1303: Type: VIIC. Commissioned: 05.04.1944, Commanders: 05.04.44 - 04,45 OlzS Heinz Baum. 04.1945-05.05.1945 OlzS Helmut Herglotz. Sunk: 04.05.1945 by the own crew.

U 1303 is not identifiable in any photo of Herglotz. Up and down, officers of another submarine (the commander is not Herglotz).
